Making your first moves in Shikaku

Shikaku gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Look at what changes after your first action.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

Build familiarity through play

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Keep the objective visible.

Understand the aim

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Put the rules into context

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Keep the controls nearby.

An important reminder

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. Check the rule before repeating the action. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
